What the department does
Clinical Innovation evaluates candidate systems, instruments and planning methods, and governs how they enter clinical use. Its remit is the transition itself: what must be shown, by whom, and before how many patients are affected.
Staged introduction
Introduction is phased by design — laboratory evaluation, structured clinical evaluation, limited introduction at named centers, then network adoption if results support it. The third-generation MagnePlate programme is the current example of that sequence.
Saying no
Most candidates do not reach the portfolio. The department publishes its evaluation framework internally so that a decision not to adopt is as reviewable as a decision to adopt, and neither depends on the enthusiasm of the team proposing it.
Digital planning
The Digital Plate Planning System, implemented nationally in 2022, came through this department, and its effect on patient understanding continues to be studied under a Patient Experience protocol.
