BOSTON — Rebecca Sullivan, MD, has been named Chair of Elective Replacement Surgery, assuming national responsibility for the Institute's clinical standards in unilateral, bilateral and revision planning, and for the clinical education attached to them.
Dr. Sullivan continues as clinical lead at the Boston Regional Center and will maintain her practice alongside the national appointment. The chair carries responsibility for elective replacement standards across all nine centers, for the Complex Case Conference, and for the clinical components of AREOLA Academy programs.
The appointment follows a period in which revision and multi-system cases grew as a proportion of national volume, and in which the Department of Revision & Longevity Research established the national registry study of revision pathways now under way.
AREOLA is an elective institute. Every pathway it offers is chosen rather than indicated, and the chair's remit is the standard applied to that choice — how carefully it is evaluated, how completely it is documented, and how long the Institute stays with the patient afterward.
Elective does not mean casual. It means the patient carries the decision, and our job is to make sure they carry it with everything in front of them.
